The Hebrew University of Jerusalem is proud to announce that Professor Yehu Moran from the Alexander Silberman Institute of Life Sciences at the Faculty of Science has been elected as a member of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO), joining a distinguished community of over 2,100 leading researchers who guide the direction of life sciences globally.

Prof Yehu Moran’s laboratory investigates how complex molecular defense systems evolve under strong evolutionary pressure, focusing on venom and immune systems. The group studies the forces that drive the origin, diversification, and long-term maintenance of these systems, from individual molecules and cells to interactions between organisms in their natural environments. Combining molecular biology, evolutionary biology, and ecology, the lab uses cnidarians, including sea anemones, corals, jellyfish, and hydras as model organisms to uncover general principles governing the evolution of biological complexity.

“Professor Yehu Moran’s election to EMBO is a proud moment for the Hebrew University and a powerful recognition of the groundbreaking science emerging from our community. His innovative research on the evolution of biological defense systems advances our understanding of life itself as well as exemplifies the curiosity, creativity, and scientific excellence that define our university. We warmly congratulate Prof. Moran on this distinguished honor.”
Prof. Oron Shagrir, Rector of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem

EMBO is a highly respected membership organization that influences the future of life science research across Europe and beyond. Its members are selected through a highly rigorous annual peer-review process, ensuring that the organization remains at the cutting edge of post-genomic life sciences. By serving on the EMBO Council, Committees, and Advisory Boards, members apply their expert insights to shape the execution of all EMBO initiatives.

Prof Moran’s election is a testament to the global impact of his research and further strengthens the Hebrew University’s standing as a leader in scientific innovation and discovery.
