The Sternberg Fund of the Department of Comparative Religion of The Hebrew University of Jerusalem was established through the generosity of the late Sir Sigmund z”l and the late Lady Hazel Sternberg z”l (London UK) in order to encourage inter-religious understanding through the promotion of a wide range of academic and social activities.
For over 20 years, the Sternberg Fund has enriched and enlivened the Department of Comparative Religion. The Fund has allowed a remarkable measure of support for the Department’s outstanding students: since the establishment of the Fund in 1997, over 120 Sternberg Prizes for Interfaith Understanding have been awarded to outstanding students of the of the Hebrew University engaged in the study of religion.
Today, daughter Ruth Tamir continues family support for this excellent programme.
Approximately half of the recipients of the Fund’s scholarship grants to date, have gone on to complete doctoral degrees, both in Israel and abroad. A noteworthy number of the recipients have taken up university positions in Israel and Europe; a significant number of others have gone on to positions in the public sphere (e.g., interfaith relations, global development) in both Israeli governmental and NGO frameworks.
