The British Friends of the Hebrew University are launching a landmark new fund – The British Friends Postgraduate Scholarship Fund – to support the Hebrew University’s research students in the exact sciences in their quest for excellence.
Marking the Hebrew University’s centenary in 2025 and the centenary of the British Friends in 2026, the fund represents one of the most significant projects in the organisation’s 100 year history.

With over $2m committed, The British Friends Scholarship Fund will provide more than 200 generous scholarships for outstanding research students working to solve the world’s most pressing problems in medicine, food supply, environment, and sustainability.
The initiative aims to support the brightest minds of the next generation and invest directly in the human and intellectual capital that underpins Israel’s future.

Alan Jacobs, Chair of the British Friends of the Hebrew University, said:
“For a century, British Friends have stood behind the Hebrew University and its mission to advance knowledge for the benefit of Israel and the wider world. The British Friends’ Scholarship Fund is our most ambitious investment yet in people – the brilliant young researchers whose ideas will power the next 100 years of discovery. By supporting over 200 talented postgraduate students in the exact sciences, we are strengthening the foundations of Israel’s scientific leadership and deepening the UK’s connection to one of the world’s great universities.”

Prof Tamir Sheafer, President of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, welcomed the launch of the fund, saying:
“The Hebrew University was founded on a simple yet profound belief: that developing the intellectual potential of our people is Israel’s greatest long-term asset. This visionary initiative by the British Friends comes at a time when global challenges in fields such as climate, health, technology, and food security demand ever more rigorous scientific research. The British Friends’ Scholarship Fund will enable outstanding young scientists to pursue cutting-edge work in Jerusalem, with capacity for impact that extends far beyond our campus to Israeli society, the international research community, across the Middle East and beyond.”

The British Friends’ Scholarship Fund will strengthen the long standing partnership between the UK and the Hebrew University by enabling exceptional students and researchers to tackle some of the most pressing scientific questions of our time.
As the University and its British Friends mark their shared centenaries, the fund is intended as a forward looking legacy: a commitment to nurturing curiosity, excellence and innovation for decades to come.
