HU Alumni Association Torch Talks: Jews in the News and Hollywood:

Whether on a TV show, in a news story, or on the silver screen, how are Jews depicted in the public eye? What's it like to be Jewish in the newsroom? Join The American Friends of the Hebrew University and the AFHU Alumni Association to answer these questions and more from a stellar line-up of Hebrew University alumni journalists including Ami Eden '94 of 70 Faces Media, Matt Katz '99 of WNYC and NPR, and Malina Saval '94 of Variety.

Ami Eden is the CEO of 70 Faces Media, the largest and most diverse Jewish media company in North America. Its brands include the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, My Jewish Learning, Hey Alma, Kveller, The Nosher, and The New York Jewish Week.

Matt Katz reports on air at WNYC public radio and NPR about immigration, criminal justice, and politics. He covered New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie for more than five years, first for The Philadelphia Inquirer and then for WNYC. In 2015 Matt and a team from WNYC won a Peabody Award for their coverage of Christie and the Bridgegate scandal. In 2016, Matt's biography of Christie -- American Governor: Chris Christie's Bridge to Redemption -- was published by Simon & Schuster. Matt has written about politics and immigration for The Washington Post, The New York Times, The Atlantic, The New Republic, and Politico. Before covering the Statehouse in Trenton he spent time in Afghanistan, writing a series on reconstruction efforts for The Philadelphia Inquirer that won the Livingston Award for International Reporting for journalists under the age of 35.

Malina Saval is features editor at Variety, where she covers the human interest and entertainment beats. Her writing and essays have appeared in the Los Angeles Times, Glamour, Jerusalem Post, Forward, Tablet, and various other publications. She has won two L.A. Press Club awards and is a board member of the L.A. Press Club. Prior to joining Variety in 2013, Saval wrote screenplays for Touchstone Pictures and Walt Disney Films. Saval’s book, The Secret Lives of Boys: Inside the Raw Emotional World of Male Teens, was published in 2009 and she has appeared as a guest on such programs as NPR’s Talk of the Nation, CBS Radio, and the Patt Morrison Show.
