In the wake of 7 October, Jewish communities in Israel and the UK have faced trauma, fear and uncertainty, though in starkly different ways.
In Israel, Professor Orna Shemer has worked closely with evacuated and frontline communities, documenting the psychological impact of the attacks and helping develop models of recovery and resilience.
In the UK, consultant psychologist Dr Nikki Scheiner, who leads CST’s Psychological First Aid programme, has supported communities responding to rising anxiety, antisemitism and violent incidents such as the Manchester synagogue attack.
Together they explore what trauma looks like in different contexts, and how communities find the resources to respond.
The panel will be chaired by Jocelyn Blumberg, a Consultant Clinical Psychologist and trauma specialist

Who Will You See There?
Dr Nikki Scheiner is one of the founders of the Psychological Response Team at CST and helped develop the protocol for CST’s Psychological First Responders. Nikki is a consultant psychologist with a background in adult mental health, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and has a special interest in building resilience.
Jocelyn Blumberg is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist and trauma specialist. She trained in South Africa, qualifying in 2000, and moved to the UK in 2004. She has extensive experience working with a broad rnage of trauma survivors and has taught and practiced internationally, including in South Africa, Turkey, and Australia.
Orna Shemer is an Israeli social work scholar and community practitioner whose work focuses on trauma, community resilience, participation, and the integration of lived experience into social policy and practice. She is an Associate Adjunct Professor at the Paul Baerwald School of Social Work and Social Welfare at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. With over three decades of professional experience, she has led and evaluated community and recovery processes in contexts of conflict, displacement, poverty, and crisis, including work with kibbutz communities, mixed cities, and populations affected by war and collective trauma. She advises government ministries and civil society organisations in Israel and internationally.
